About Us
The National Art Gallery was set up in May 2001 under Section 3 of the National Art Gallery Act 1999.
It operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Culture. It plays a significant role in the implementation of a visual art culture in Mauritius. Through its mission, the Institution aims at promoting the Mauritian art and artists.

- Striving to inspire, interest, enhance the creative sensibility of the Public
- Developing the visual literacy of the Public
Objectives
- Develop and conserve a National Collection comprising of works of art and related materials;
- Make all endeavours towards the most advantageous use of the National Collection in the national interest;
- Promote knowledge and the dissemination of information on art to the public;
- Exhibit works of art from the National Collection or works of art that are otherwise in the possession of the National Art Gallery;
- Generally promote itself in the interest of the public;
- Provide a work site for artists;
- Document and keep a detailed inventory of each item in the National Collection or in its possession
- Promote Mauritian art and artists;
- Promote exchange of ideas and participation in international exhibitions and related matters on an international level;
- Co-ordinate and sustain initiatives consistent with or in support of the objectives of the National Art Gallery;
- Acquire and impart knowledge about international standards and ethics in the conservation of works of art.
